平方度是一個量度天體在天球所佔面積的單位，大小約相等於一個邊長各一度。由於一個圓形有360度，天球的總面積若以“平方度”來作單位，則約41252.96平方度。計算方法如下：

圓形的周界：

$\begin{matrix} S & = & 2*\pi*r =360 \\ r & = & {180 \over \pi} \end{matrix}$

圓面積：

$\begin{matrix} A &=& 4 * \pi * r^2 \\ \ &=& 2 * (2 * \pi * r) * r \\ \ &=& 2 * 360 * {180 \over \pi} \\ \ & = & 41252.96 \end{matrix}$

天球上最大的單一星座是長蛇座，面積約為1,303平方度，差不多佔了整個天球面積的1/32。
